This website guides you on a walking trail around some of the most interesting artworks that embellish the historic heart of Glasgow, the Merchant City. Glasgow is particularly rich in architectural sculpture and civic adornment, mainly because the Victorians, who built so much of the city, were partial to uplifting decoration and the City has been active in growing and adding to that legacy over the subsequent century. The Merchant City area, as the traditional civic and commercial centre, has now the densest concentration of public art in Glasgow.
The Merchant City Initiative would like to thank the individual artists and also Ray McKenzie’s invaluable book Public Sculpture of Glasgow. Additional photography by L. Crawford and S Guéneau, Simon Smith of Glasgow City Council, and Gill Stewart of Glasgow Building Preservation Trust.
