Welcome to the second edition of this guide to goings on in Glasgow's Merchant City. Since the 17th
Century Glasgow's Merchant City has rarely slept…and today is no
exception. In fact there's more to get you out of bed and up 'til
the wee hours than ever before - from espresso and bagel bars,
through designer and artisan shopping circuits to the finest
variety of restaurants and club venues in tinsel town - the old
City merchants would have been proud. Their legacy of enterprise
and adventure and their flair for business and setting out a stall
lives on!
A
visit to Glasgow's Merchant City today is not likely to lead to
an encounter with the be-wigged and be-jewelled tobacco merchants
who gave the area its name and the City it's great wealth and
much of its amazing architecture; also its not probable that you'll
come across the smells and sounds of the 'dead meat' market, but
remnants of the old fruit and flower bazaar still hangs on and
the products of both still feature highly in the award winning
eateries of the area, mingling with the musical strains of jazz,
folk, house and garage.
The
area always took its sense of design and style seriously - whether
it was the laying out of the stone, paved grid streets or the
creation of vista stopping icons at the edge, like Hutcheson's
Hall - now the scene of the Glasgow Style shop. The Merchant City
has also added a new category of city living to the Glasgow estate
agency patois - the urban loft dweller, the studio/workspace man
and the penthouse or apartment inhabitant - whether its cool minimalism
or modern classicism - Merchant City has a floorspace and a lifestyle
that fits.
So if you have a love of design, a strong streak of individuality
and love the buzz of business - what on earth has taken you so
long to find us ?
design.
