History and Architecture
Summon any view that typifies Glasgow before 1800 and nine times out of ten it will involve Glasgow Cross and the Trongate. The Trongate was Glasgow's Royal Mile - the administrative, mercantile, commercial and cultural heart of the city, the meeting place of the City's great merchants, the scene of vast public meetings, the site of the first hotel for travellers at the Tontine and the view which gave the 'chief delight' to visitors with its colonnaded walks and piazzas.
